About the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences has an enviable research record and is the University of Melbourne’s largest faculty in terms of management of financial resources, employment of academic and professional staff, teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate (including research higher degree) students and the conduct of basic and applied research. The Faculty’s annual revenue is $630m with approximately 55% of this income related to research activities.

About the Role

This position in the Biological Research Centre (BRC) of the Department of Otolaryngology provides support for biological studies within the department and affiliated research institutes.  The incumbent works as part of a small team and provides assistance to research scientists. The position requires excellent teamwork skills and attention to detail. Working with multiple species, this position provides the opportunity to broaden your skills base and appropriate training is provided as necessary.

In a typical week at work, you may:

  • order and monitor the animal care supplies, chemical supplies, and office supplies;
  • be responsible for the daily care, cleaning, maintenance and husbandry under the direction of the BRC Coordinator and BRC Senior Animal Technician; and
  • comply with all applicable regulations, policies, standards, and guidelines for the humane care of animals used under scientific purposes.

About You

You will be able to display initiative and practical problem-solving skills in your daily duties, and have excellent interpersonal skills that allow you to effectively work as a part of a team. You will be able to maintain accurate and legible records, and have intermediate computer skills, particularly with the Microsoft Office suite.

Ideally, you will further have:

  • Diploma of Animal Technology (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in animal handling techniques
  • Knowledge of all relevant codes and practices
