About the role 

The successful applicant will have proven leadership experience in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context in either the government, not-for-profit arena or corporate organisations.

They will have a mature outlook for working collaboratively with other senior managers with different professional backgrounds and disciplines. This leader will demonstrate confidence, with the ability to negotiate in a way that maintains mutually valuable relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including allies and critics. You will need to lead (by your strong example) a highperforming team of dedicated staff, to engage in robust, issues-based discussions in the interests of the ABS to shape and lead a work program that meets the broad objectives listed above. 

This is an Identified position and requires knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and cultures, as well as the ability to communicate sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. 

The roles are only available to be filled in the locations specified [Canberra, Darwin, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne], based on the needs of the hiring area and to meet the requirements of being a merit based process. The ABS will negotiate relocation arrangements, consistent with the ABS Enterprise Agreement 2019, if you are required to relocate. Note: ABS employees who have access to market sensitive information are restricted in market trading activities. You may not be allowed to trade in financial products while employed. 

Your qualities, experiences and skills

We are looking for a highly motivated, adaptable and collaborative leader. To be suitable you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience: 

• well-developed leadership skills, including the ability to work independently and demonstrate sound judgement
• strategic stakeholder management and engagement skills including excellent communication and negotiation skills to represent the ABS in forums, public events or other situations as required
• ability to manage work program across multiple locations
• ability to manage staff for high performance having a focus on achieving results through others
• understanding of statistical concepts, the data landscape, and an aptitude to further develop data professional capabilities
• ability to apply conceptual and analytical thinking to relevant national reporting frameworks (e.g. Closing the Gap). 

This is an Identified position and thus candidates must demonstrate their understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures, as well as the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

If found suitable but not offered a role you will be placed in the merit pool. If you agree in your application this means you may be offered a similar role in the ABS or another APS agency.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this role you:

• must be an Australian citizen at the time you apply
• will need to undertake pre-employment checks, including national police check and health assessment
• will need to obtain (or hold) and maintain at least Baseline security clearance.
