About the Museums and Collection Department
The Museums and Collection Department aims to build a collaborative and flexible network around the University’s cultural assets to enable students, staff members local and global communities to gain knowledge and understanding of contemporary and traditional cultures, scientific discovery and creative practice. The Department is responsible for Buxton Contemporary, Science Gallery Melbourne, Ian Potter Museum of Art, Old Quadrangle Treasury, and the Grainger Museum.
About the Role
As the Curatorial Assistant you will be responsible for providing support to the Head of Curatorial in the administration, development and production of the Science Gallery Melbourne exhibition and program seasons, as well as support the administration around the payment of invoices and budget management.
In a typical week at work, you will work closely with the Head of Curatorial, and other colleagues at Science Gallery Melbourne, to plan, produce and deliver engaging, audience-focused interdisciplinary exhibitions and programs. This includes:

- Researching new artworks, research and participatory projects to include in the exhibition seasons
- Assisting with coordination and delivery of the thematic exhibition and program seasons
- Liaison with colleagues, participating artists and scientists, community partners, external freelancers and others to assist deliver of the exhibition, events and other season outcomes
- Support the creation of written materials for gallery and online platforms
Other duties as required is one of the best parts of this job. Examples of past duties that would have fallen into this category include sourcing and caring for 10,000 live mealworms and assisting with the production of a battery powered by human urine.
Please note this is a Fixed term part-time (0.6 FTE) role available for 1 year.
About You
As a strong, empathetic communicator, you understand how to engage and influence a variety of stakeholders across different contexts to build lasting, productive relationships. You are an enthusiastic, energetic and self-motivated individual, who enjoys working in diverse work environments.
Ideally, you will further have:
- Experience assisting with the development and/or delivery of exhibitions within the areas of science, engineering, technology, maths and/or creative arts
- Excellent administrative and project management skills including the ability to prioritise in the planning, co-ordination and completion of tasks to meet deadlines
- Desirable: Experience working within museums, galleries or other parts of the cultural sector
