ABOUT THE ROLE
The position is a 12 month parental leave backfill.
The Grade V Employment Senior Solicitor leads Legal Aid NSW’s employment law and workplace discrimination practice and manages the specialist Employment Law team (4 solicitors and a paralegal) based in Central Sydney. The team provides advice and representation (including litigation) to Legal Aid NSW clients and supports the Civil Law Division’s practice in key areas of employment and workplace discrimination law. The Grade V solicitor also maintains their own practice.  
The Employment Law team contributes to Legal Aid NSW’s law reform and strategic advocacy projects. Their work involves collaboration within Legal Aid NSW (i.e. other Civil Law specialist services, the Criminal Law Division and the Strategic Law Reform Unit) and with external stakeholders (e.g. community legal centres and other NSW and commonwealth government agencies).

ABOUT YOU
The successful applicants will be someone with:

  • Expertise in Employment law and discrimination law
  • Expertise in litigation
  • Experience leading teams working with disadvantaged clients and communities
  • Experience in supervising staff
  • Experience working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve improved outcomes for disadvantaged clients or communities

• Admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW
 
• Ability to provide a valid Practising Certificate upon commencement 
 
• Willingness to undertake a Criminal Record Check and/or working with Children Check
 
• Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Resident or hold a valid working visa

Position Summary

The Administration Officer provides direct, support to the Assistant Director, Compliance & Quality and the broader Education Regulations Team. The role requires general administration functions relative to international compliance reporting and the broader education provider regulatory work of the team. The role is responsible for the diary and generic email account management of the team, drafting correspondence, presentations and team reports, organising training schedules and ensuring that actions arising from correspondence and meetings are completed in a timely and appropriate manner.

The role is also responsible for co-administering the student loans program for some overseas students enrolled under financial loans (US Government) and entitlements, working closely with RMIT Financial Services. The role will also coordinate the general office administrative and undertake regulatory data entry requirements of the team. The incumbent will undertake special projects, coordinating events in conjunction with Group activities and supporting the development and implementation of strategic and operational requirements of the broader RAC group.

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

* Demonstrated experience in the delivery of administrative services in an education or other heavily regulated sector.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively, flexibly and collaboratively with colleagues within and beyond the immediate work unit, including to external and overseas stakeholders, contributing to the achievement of team goals and compliance requirements.

About the Portfolio

The Finance and Governance portfolio partners with other areas of the university in achieving the organisations objectives, by strategically orienting its provision of financial, legal, analytics, risk and assurance and secretarial services to the delivery of the core operations of the university.

The Risk, Audit and Compliance (RAC) team undertakes audit and risk management programs of activity as approved by the Audit and Risk Management Committee (ARMC) of Council. These programs are practical in nature and extend across RMIT and its controlled entities.

The principal functions of the team are to provide management and the Council with independent and objective assurance that the financial and operational controls designed to manage the University's risks and achieve the University's objectives are operating in an efficient, effective and ethical manner, and to assist management in improving the University's and its operating entities' business performance.

The RAC function also provides strategic and operational guidance and support to RMIT on the development, implementation, monitoring and review of frameworks to manage compliance in operational areas; undertakes activities to monitor and improve compliance performance and culture throughout the RMIT Group and to provide compliance assurance to senior executive staff and the University's Council. The management of RMIT International Student Compliance sits with this function.

Administrative Officer (Indigenous Support)

Deakin’s Faculty of Health is recognised in Australia and internationally for its teaching, training, research and service to its communities. Working as part the School of Medicine, the primary purpose of the Administrative Officer (Indigenous Support) is to undertake a wide range of administrative, promotional and project duties to support the Indigenous Health portfolio within the School of Medicine. The Administrative Officer (Indigenous Support) provides administrative support to the Associate Head of School, Indigenous Strategy to raise awareness, appropriateness, and consistency across the school (and at times wider University) on cultural engagement best practices for the region. This position will work closely with the Indigenous Health team staff based at our Waurn Ponds campus to ensure all events are conducted in a culturally appropriate manner.

In line with special measure provisions in Section 12 of the Victorian Equal Opportunity Act (2010), the University will only be accepting applications for this position from people who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide high-level administrative support to the Associate Head of School, Indigenous Strategy in relation to the Indigenous Health Program.
  • Assist and participate with research and educational projects designed to improve the health of Indigenous Australians.
  • Provide high-level support in the development and implementation of community engagement and outreach strategies and services to meet the goals outlined in the School’s Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) contract.
  • Network with local Indigenous communities and Aboriginal Medical Services within the western Victoria region.
  • Commission community health and wellbeing projects, being a point of contact for students who may require cultural advice or support when attending the School of Medicine.
  • Provide administrative support for the Coordinator Indigenous Medical Education relevant to the Indigenous Health Program.
  • Assist the Associate Head of School, Indigenous Strategy and other relevant staff to promote training and education opportunities for Indigenous health professionals and community members and to promote alternate pathways into Deakin Health courses for prospective students.
  • Assist with the production of RHMT reports and other funding body reports.
  • Compile relevant material for the Indigenous Entry Stream (IES) website as requested.
  • Provide cultural advice for the provision of various marketing, recruitment and alumni events and functions relating to, but not necessarily limited to, Open Days, Deakin Week, career expos, secondary school fairs, etc.
  • Assist with the implementation of training and education courses about Indigenous Health.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Completion of a diploma level qualification and subsequent relevant work experience (administrative) OR an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

 Your duties as a Senior Solicitor in the Civil Law Division will include:

• Providing high quality advice, minor assistance and casework services in areas of disability law with specific focus on matters conducted before the Mental Health Review Tribunal under the Mental Health Act, the Guardianship Act, NSW Trustee and Guardian Act and Drug and Alcohol Treatment Act.

• Coordinating the provision of relevant services, including representation, throughout the NSW.

• Conduct and supervise other legal officers to ensure an efficient and effective legal practice in accordance with the standards required by Legal Aid NSW.
• Community engagement, identifying and attending community and government agency events and meetings. The aim is to promote our services and identify community needs and opportunities

Your role includes providing high quality criminal law advice, minor assistance and casework services to disadvantaged clients. You should be able to communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and to work effectively and efficiently in a high pressure environment.
Ideally you will have some criminal law and advocacy experience. Experience before the State Parole Authority is not essential – training will be provided in relation to the specialist jurisdiction.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
 
• Admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW 
 
• Ability to provide a valid Practising Certificate upon commencement
 
• Willingness to undertake a Criminal Record Check and/or working with Children Check
 
• Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, or Australian Permanent resident  is an essential requirement of applying for an Ongoing role

• Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencement

The selection process will include a range of comparative assessment techniques to assist in determining capability and suitability for the role.

This recruitment will be used to fill any current vacancies and may be used to create a Talent Pool for similar future ongoing and temporary vacancies that may arise over the next 18 months.
