About the ARC Steel Research Hub
The position is funded through the Australian Research Council's Steel Research Hub (grant IH 200100005) where RMIT University is a partner with several academic and industry participants under the Industrial Transformation Research initiative of the Australian Government. The Hub conducts a 5 year, $28m research program designed to support the transition of Australia's steel manufacturing industry to a more sustainable, competitive and resilient position based on the creation of new, higher value-added products and more advanced manufacturing processes.

Our Culture
Our Values inspire us, wherever we are in the world, and guide how we live and work together.

Imagination. Agility. Courage. Passion. Impact. Inclusion.

What unites us is our purpose and our values; they are at the heart of who we are, what we stand for, how we make decisions and connect with each other.

Our people make everything at the University possible. We encourage new approaches to work and learning, stimulating change to drive positive impact. RMIT exists to create transformative experiences for our students, getting them ready for life and work. You will be a part of a productive and collaborative team, who values working relationships and outcomes through open and inclusive planning, continuous information sharing and transparent work practices.

About You
The appointee will work within RMIT's Materials Modelling and Simulation (MMS) group in the School of Engineering, under supervision of the group's leader who is also the ARC Steel Hub Chief Investigator and Program Leader. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be required to undertake high-quality, cutting-edge theoretical molecular modelling of hybrid organic-inorganic solution based and solid state materials at multiple time and length scales. The models will guide our industry partners and experimental collaborators in developing robust surfaces and multifunctional nanostructured materials. It is anticipated that new, commercially sensitive design strategies for enhanced performance surface coatings of the steel-derived products will be developed.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be responsible for multiscale modelling of complex interfacial phenomena in commercial coatings as well as other materials in order to optimize their performance under various environmental conditions, including temperature, pH and ionic strength. The research will involve development and implementation of computational strategies for prediction of structural and dynamic properties of various types of nanomaterials (metal, oxide, carbon based) and their interfaces with synthetic and bio-polymers in solution and will broadly contribute to collaborative research within the MMS group.

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

* Demonstrated research track record in computational modelling of complex systems using classical Molecular Dynamics simulations. Skills in enhanced sampling techniques, free energy calculations and forcefield development would be an advantage. Experience with quantum chemical calculations is desirable.
* Publications in reputable journals in the field of computational chemistry, physics or materials science.
* Demonstrated record of working autonomously as well as in a team environment, including collaboration with experimental partners and/or industry.
* Ability to co-supervise postgraduate by research students.
* Excellent presentation and scientific writing skills.
* Excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate for interacting with higher degree by research candidates, academic staff and industry.
