About the Opportunities

ALPA is currently looking for multiple enthusiastic couples to join their team as Store Managers, working in one of several communities within Arnhem Land, NT. We are classified as an essential service, and can therefore opperate regardless of lockdowns and restrictions. This means that you'll enjoy excellent job security and stability in your new role. 

Sharing management duties as a couple, you will run our local store, working with and learning from local Aboriginal community members to maximise employment and training opportunities.

Core duties:

  • Manage the ordering and receiving of stock, accounting for timelines to ensure necessary stock is available when needed
  • Provide effective leadership, management, supervision and on the job training to Aboriginal store workers
  • Implement policies of the Community Council which relate to the operation of the store

Please note that this role is built for couples with the ability to share work responsibilities and accommodation. Successful candidates need not be in a relationship and may be any two people who could successfully fulfil work responsibilities while sharing accommodation.

You will also need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before commencing with ALPA

About You 

To be successful, one member of your couple will need to have demonstrated experience in the retail sector, with strong financial skills and an understanding of stock control principles. Because this role requires two people, transferrable skills will be considered provided at least one person has relevant experience.

You'll be highly organised, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to effectively manage indigenous staff members, where cultural norms and community development priorities may differ from your own.

Although not essential, any experience working in remote areas or with Aboriginal communities will be highly regarded. As will, an understanding of Aboriginal history, culture and contemporary Aboriginal political, social, cultural and economic issues. You'll require a demonstrated ability to work with traditional Aboriginal people, as well as a commitment to the principles of Aboriginal self-determination at a community level.

It will be important to have the confidence and resilience to work in, what can often be an undeniably challenging environment. You will need to be flexible to the needs of the store, and comfortable handling environmental issues such as heat, dust and dirt.

Please note: One partner will need a current, unrestricted Manual Driver's Licence. Both partners need to have or be willing to obtain a National Police Check and pre-employment medical.

One partner will also have the opportunity to obtain your truck license and forklift licence if you do not already have these.
