About the role
You will work primarily to promote national implementation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) as well as supporting the other work streams of the IHL department.
You will be responsible for fostering strategic and constructive relationships with the Australian Government and developing internal legal and policy positions on matters relating to IHL issues within Australia.
You will also coordinate the IHL departments engagement with the legal sector, including the judiciary.
The Legal Adviser is also a representative of the IHL department in the ACT and undertakes specific stakeholder engagement and IHL training and dissemination locally as required.
What you will bring
* Legal qualification and proven legal practice experience in Australia
* Experience working in a legal or policy function within Government
* Demonstrated understanding of government processes, public policy, politics and advocacy
* Broad, up-to-date contacts in federal government and strong networking and relationship building skills
* Highly-developed diplomatic and persuasive skills
* Strong knowledge of international humanitarian law
* Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in a matrix structure – demonstrating initiative, flexibility and willingness to collaborate
