About Your Next Opportunity

We now have an exciting opportunity for dedicated and driven case workers interested in training in financial counselling to join our passionate team.

Working closely with the Financial Wellbeing Team Leader, your key responsibility will be to contribute to our vision by developing culturally safe and tailored care plans to assist Aboriginal clients and their families in achieving their financial goals and addressing vulnerabilities. You will also advocate for our clients about entitlements, debts and unfair contracts and work alongside them to achieve a sustainable financial position.

Some of the things you will be doing day-to-day will include:

  • Develop well-formulated case plans that help your clients work towards their financial resilience goals and build an understanding of the connections between money and wellbeing;
  • Negotiate payment plans, debt waivers and reductions for clients with creditors and external dispute resolution bodies;
  • Advocate for and ensure that clients are receiving correct payments, entitlements and concessions;
  • Work with individuals, families and other colleagues/support workers from a holistic, trauma-informed perspective to address issues underlying financial stress; and
  • Assist clients with various other issues, including making applications to financial administration for vulnerable people, bankrupt and tax returns.

Please note: You must have a current (preferably manual) Driver's Licence and access to your own AWD/4WD vehicle for personal use and travel. A work car is available for use during business hours. You will also be subject to a National Police Clearance, Working with Children Check and pre-employment medical check. Due to the nature of this role, you will need to be triple vaccinated against COVID-19.

To thrive in this role, you will be an enthusiastic and motivated individual who possesses a Bachelor of Social Work, Certificate IV in Community Services, Diploma or Financial Counselling or equivalent. You will also have a minimum of two years of experience working in community service with complex clients (experience with ATSI clients and/or a remote setting is highly desirable).

If you don’t have the Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling) but have a willingness to learn and the right foundational skills and), we’ll reimburse the cost of your study on successful completion. We’ll also support you with the ongoing development of trauma-informed practice skills.

We are looking for individuals passionate about tackling poverty, inequality and financial inclusion working from a trauma-informed perspective with ATSI clients. You will also have the skills to deliver end-to-end client case planning and conferencing with multi-disciplinary professionals.

Importantly, you will have the ability to effectively work from a strength-based, client-centred perspective and establish rapport and determine what underlies presenting issues. Moreover, you will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and basic knowledge of the Australian legal system for effective advocacy.

About the Goulburn Valley Regional Training Hub

Working with the Regional Training Hub Alliance, the GVRTH seeks to encourage development of rural training pathways for junior doctors.

About the Role
This is a fixed term position until the end of 2024. Working closely with an academic lead, the Manager GVRTH oversees the operational direction of all GVRTH programs and initiatives to meet the requirements of the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program.

The Manager, GVRTH will develop and implement programs, monitor progress throughout the year, evaluate outcomes and make recommendations for change. This position manages a small team of three professional staff to develop and implement the objectives of the program.

In a typical week at work, you may:

  • Ensure the GVRTH performance indicators (as specified in the University of Melbourne Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Agreement) are met or exceeded.
  • Lead the strengthening, and further development of strong partnerships with all health services in the local region
  • Manage and coordinate a range of GV Regional Training Hub programs and initiatives.

About You
You are an experienced manager with the ability to lead, motivate and engage staff to develop high performance and results, and a service-oriented culture within the team. You have strong organisational and program management skills, and experience in budget and resource management, and in the negotiation and execution of contracts. Your enthusiastic and flexible approach to work will place you in good stead for this role, as will your ability to analyse and problem solve.

Ideally, you will further have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or extensive experience and management expertise; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal) , including report writing.
  • High-level communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrated use of networks to identify and solve issues.

The discipline promotes strong, interdisciplinary collaboration within Applied Health and contributes to the mission and vision of the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences, the STEM College and RMIT University. The Mental Health Advocacy Service is based at Legal Aid’s Central Sydney office and provides advice, minor assistance and representation to people in mental health, guardianship and, drug and alcohol treatment matters throughout NSW. These matters are conducted before the Mental Health Review Tribunal, Guardianship Division of NCAT, Supreme Court and before Magistrates (for matters conducted under the Drug and Alcohol Treatment Act).

We are looking for a senior lawyer to job share the role of leading and managing the civil arm of the MHAS practice. That involves working Monday and Tuesday each week. The role involves coordinating services, including representation, across NSW through utilising a combination of inhouse MHAS solicitors as well as inhouse civil law Legal Aid solicitors located at other offices and members of Legal Aid’s private practitioners civil panel.

ABOUT THE ROLE

 Your duties as a Senior Solicitor in the Civil Law Division will include:

• Providing high quality advice, minor assistance and casework services in areas of disability law with specific focus on matters conducted before the Mental Health Review Tribunal under the Mental Health Act, the Guardianship Act, NSW Trustee and Guardian Act and Drug and Alcohol Treatment Act.

• Coordinating the provision of relevant services, including representation, throughout the NSW.

• Conduct and supervise other legal officers to ensure an efficient and effective legal practice in accordance with the standards required by Legal Aid NSW.
• Community engagement, identifying and attending community and government agency events and meetings. The aim is to promote our services and identify community needs and opportunities
• Assisting with team planning and implementing identified new services. This is a strategic task to help ensure we are meeting Legal Aid’s priorities in targeted and efficient ways.
• Comply with the Legal Aid Commission Act, policies and practice management standards and undertake all related administrative and case management activities.

ABOUT YOU

 

The successful applicant will be an experienced legal practitioner who can maintain a busy practice, including complex matters whilst simultaneously supervising and  inspiring a team within the Mental Health Advocacy Service through innovative leadership. The successful applicant will be committed to delivering excellent service and be able to engage with external stakeholders. Management experience and enthusiasm for mentoring/developing staff is essential. The ability to work collaboratively in a job share role is essential.

• Admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW

• Ability to provide a valid Practising Certificate upon commencement

• Willingness to undertake a Criminal Record Check and/or working with Children Check
