ABOUT LEGAL AID NSW
Legal Aid NSW is the largest legal aid agency in Australia, comprising of a Central Sydney office and 23 regional offices in metropolitan and regional centres across NSW and a number of specialist services and advice clinics. Working at Legal Aid NSW provides the opportunity to support people with disabilities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, women and children, Indigenous people and people with mental illness who may experience difficulties when enforcing and defending their rights.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Civil Law Service for Aboriginal Communities (CLSAC) delivers legal services to specific Aboriginal communities and correctional centres across NSW that are responsive to their legal, social and cultural needs. Through outreach and phone services, CLSAC aims to provide high quality advice and casework services to Aboriginal people that deliver better outcomes for people's everyday lives. It works with Aboriginal communities and community workers to increase their capacity to deal with civil law problems as they arise and to work in partnership with other legal and non-legal services. The team manages a diverse and demanding workload and commonly handles consumer law, housing, Centrelink, fines and human rights matters. It also engages in strategic advocacy about systemic issues facing Aboriginal people across NSW.
This position is to service north west NSW including Bourke and Brewarrina. There is scope for the position to be located in Sydney or a regional office location in Central or North West NSW.
ABOUT YOU
The successful applicant will be a lawyer who has experience working with Aboriginal clients and communities and has a passion for addressing the social justice issues facing communities across NSW. The applicant will be willing to travel to rural and remote NSW for up to 5 days at a time and have community development or project skills that enable them to work collaboratively and creatively.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
• Admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW
• Ability to provide a valid Practising Certificate upon commencement
• Willingness to undertake a Criminal Record Check and/or working with Children Check
• Hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Resident or hold a valid working visa
• Hold a valid NSW Drivers Licence
• Understanding and knowledge of working with Aboriginal clients and communities in NSW

1. What is your experience and knowledge of issues that impact on access to justice for Aboriginal people and communities in NSW?
2. This role requires you to take a community development approach to service delivery in Bourke and Brewarrina and to develop strong referral networks to improve access to legal services. Please outline your suitability for such a role.
The selection process will include a range of comparative assessment techniques to assist in determining capability and suitability for the role.
This recruitment will be used to fill any current vacancies and may be used to create a Talent Pool for similar future vacancies that may arise over the next 12 months.
