About the Opportunity

Ngaanyatjarra Council currently has an opportunity for a Housing Officer to join their team, working in communities on the Ngaanyatjarra Lands while being based in Blackstone, WA.

Reporting to the Tenancy Manager, you will be responsible for managing and promoting better tenancy practices for all public housing residents in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands.

Your day to day duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Meeting regularly with Ngaanyatjarra residents to ensure tenancy agreements are signed, rent is received, property condition reports are undertaken, and maintenance is logged for each public housing party;
  • Assisting and advising tenants of their responsibilities, ensuring they comply with Department of Communities, Housing Authority requirements, and local housing policies and procedures.

About You

Ngaanyatjarra Council is open to candidates from a range of backgrounds, including the community sector, real estate (in a position related to housing inspections), in community-based volunteer positions, and in positions working directly with Indigenous people.

Moreover, even though you will be living and working in Blackstone, an established community with basic services (fully stocked store etc.), the area itself is very remote.

To be successful, you will need to have a strong level of resilience to cope with the challenging environment, while also embracing the opportunity to directly engage with remote Aboriginal communities.

You will also need to be self-motivated and capable of working autonomously, and possess the interpersonal skills and cultural awareness necessary to build rapport with both local residents and dispersed coworkers.

While not essential, any experience working within a remote community, and/or with disadvantaged peoples, will be highly regarded, as will any understanding of Aboriginal history, culture and contemporary Aboriginal political, social, cultural and economic issues.

Please note: You will need a current, unrestricted Manual Driver's Licence prior to commencing employment.

About the role

Trainee Correctional Officer (Correctional Officer Class 1 $65,807 – $78,473 – upon successful completion of training)

ACT Corrective Services, Canberra, is looking for people with demonstrated life experience, personal integrity, self-confidence, and exceptional communication skills to become Correctional Officers. An interest in community safety, the ability to operate effectively in a team, as well as having the capacity to manage and respond to people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds, is essential. Women and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
 
Successful applicants will receive a training salary for the first ten weeks ($48,813). We will provide you with all the relevant training to be a competent and accomplished Correctional Officer in the first ten weeks of your employment. This includes everything from legislations and policies, to report writing and dealing with challenging behaviours. You will also be supported to complete a fully funded, nationally recognised Certificate III in Correctional Practice within the first 12 months. The starting salary following the successful completion of this training will range between $65,807 and $78,473 per annum, plus superannuation. These positions are based at the Alexander Maconochie Centre.

Senior ACT Corrective Services staff will team up with current Correctional Officers to talk about what it is like to work in a correctional environment. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask lots of questions. About the role 

This newly developed leadership position of Executive Director, First Nations will lead FYA’s work to build the power of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to beat injustice and transform the future. This will include identifying opportunities to build the capacity of First Nations youth-led organisations, coaching young First Nations advocates, designing large scale First nations youth engagement projects, and supporting our consulting business, YLab, in delivery of co-design projects with young First Nations people.

Core responsibilities

  • Relationship building – Deeply engage with young First Nations people, Aboriginal controlled organisations, elders and other community members, to build relationships, understand issues and priorities, and set collective strategy.
     

  • Strategy and thought-leadership – Develop and deliver a dedicated strategy to build the capacity of First Nations youth-led organisations, including:

    • assessing the impact and appropriateness of existing initiatives, 

    • identifying strategic opportunities where financial investment, training or other structured support would enable growth in impact and sustainability

    • sharing this analysis through preparation of strategy memos or briefings
       

  • Capacity building – Work closely with FYA colleagues to ensure strong First Nations engagement with our grant-making, training and other capacity-building programs, including:

    • direct marketing and promotion to First Nations young people

    • design of targeted materials and communications

    • participation in selection processes

    • recruitment of First Nations mentors and consultants

    • participation in events, and delivery of training.

Depending on resources and your strategy, this work is likely to include a mix of approach – sometimes First Nations young people will participate in programs together with non-First Nations young people. In other cases, it will be more appropriate to run dedicated First Nations only cohorts or programs.

  • Strategist and connector- Acting as an immediate point of contact and relationship holder for First Nations young people with FYA, facilitating participants into other programs of the organisation, such as advocacy, strategic projects and YLab.

    • Advocacy – Work closely with the Executive Director, Advocacy, to shape and deliver an advocacy plan for First Nations youth issues. The substance of this program is to be determined but it might focus on issues of economic injustice, criminal justice, or beyond.

    • Strategic Projects – Advise on the development of both dedicated First Nations-focused projects, as well as the cultural safety and design of general programs. At FYA, our Strategic Projects are long-term initiatives that shift the power of young people in particular systems.

    • YLab – Identifying opportunities for young First Nations people to become YLab Associates and/or First Nations organisations to benefit from YLab’s First Nations practice.
       

  • General support as required. Support colleagues across the organisation to effectively and thoughtfully work with First Nations young people, including from time to time, acting as a secondary consultant on YLab First Nations projects, or coaching  young First Nations advocates.

Employment Type
