About the Role

The Postdoctoral Fellowship offers the opportunity to work across the Melbourne Centre for Cities and the Faculty of Arts on issues to do with cities and urbanism, both nationally and internationally.

Established in September 2021 as a flagship initiative of the University of Melbourne, the Centre brings together staff and students from several faculties, including Architecture, Building and Planning, Science and Arts. The Centre offers a multidisciplinary platform designed to foster individual and collaborative research centred on cities, build link with other Centres nationally and internationally, and to encourage partnerships between academic researchers and key stakeholders currently shaping the development and future of cities.

In a typical week at work, you may:

  • Develop, conduct and coordinate a program of research centred on cities and urbanism.
  • Engage proactively with the Melbourne Centre for Cities and the Faculty of Arts community, leadership, fellows, associates, doctoral group and visitors.
  • Participate in the life of the Centre and the Faculty of Arts through attendance at meetings, research forums, seminars and symposia, and through fostering internal and external collaborative endeavours around cities and urbanism.
  • Collaborate with Centre and Faculty colleagues and students in relevant research areas, leading and contributing to high-quality publications and other scholarly outputs in accordance with the research expectations of a Level A academic in the Faculty of Arts.

About You

The successful applicant will have an emerging track record of research on, engagement with, and clear interest in cities and urbanism well aligned to the mission of the Centre and the research strengths of the Faculty of Arts.

Ideally, you will further have:

  • PhD in a relevant Humanities and Social Sciences discipline
  • A research profile of work in cities and urbanism aligned to the Centre’s mission in one or more of the following areas: urban governance and urban policy; historical aspects of urban development; social dimensions of urbanism and cities; urban space; theories of urbanism; cities as sites of culture
  • Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively
  • High-level interpersonal and communication skills
  • Interest in building collaborative academic relationships and partnerships in relevant public and private organisations central to the governance of cities

About the role

As the Research Assistant will undertake research activities in line with the University's research strategy. It is expected that you will work with an increasing degree of autonomy as your skills and experience develop. This role will require you to:

* Conduct research activities under limited supervision either independently or as a member of a team including publishing and presenting research outputs at conferences and research forums;

* Contributing to external research funding submissions and participating in supervision of higher degree by research candidates.

* Undertake limited teaching and supervision at undergraduate levels as required

* Undertake administration related to the position

To be successful for this role, you will have:

* Evidence of research output including publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports in the field

* Excellent background in electrical engineering and power system analysis; this project requires assessment of requirements for backup generator synchronisation with the grid

* Good background in working with data, e.g. electricity consumption data

* Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively work with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners

* Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and effectively manage varying workloads and respond to changing priorities as required.

* Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills

Qualifications

Mandatory: Qualification in Electrical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence or similar and have completed or about to complete their PhD.

About You

This is an exciting role for someone who would like to combine their scientific background with their ability to lead and coordinate a technical team. For this role, you will have experience in a Life Sciences setting such as a microbiology or hematology laboratory, along with a sound understanding of the operational considerations required for the smooth running of these spaces. While this is not a technical role, your previous experience in a laboratory setting will have equipped you with a comprehensive understanding of the safety and compliance requirements which are specific to a laboratory space and the types of equipment housed within it. Reporting to the Senior Technical Manager, Teaching or Research Support, the Technical Coordinator, will be responsible for the day to day technical operations and support for the learning and teaching, research and industry activities that take place in the relevant laboratories or workspaces. The Technical Coordinator will be responsible for managing and working with the team of technical officers who are assigned to these workspaces ensuring the technical team meets organisational and stakeholder expectations by delivering high quality, compliant and professional service.

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

* Proven knowledge, experience, and technical ability in a Life Sciences field, including the development of projects, advanced understanding of the safe operation of relevant equipment, and a good working knowledge of relevant techniques and practices. Experience in a Haematology and/or Microbiology laboratory will be highly regarded.
* Demonstrated experience in coordinating technical support for teaching and research activities, including planning, scheduling and supervising support to ensure that it meets required standards and set timelines.
* Experience in successfully supervising or managing technical services and associated technical support staff.
* Demonstrated knowledge of current OHS legislation, regulations and standards with expertise in hazardous scenario management, and relevant experience in managing safe and compliant operations, preferably in a teaching and research environment.
* Proven initiative and problem-solving skills and ability to organise, plan and manage complex tasks, work to deadlines, plan, effectively allocate resources, initiate and see activities through to completion, and evaluate and report on outcomes.
* Highly organised with proven ability to prioritise tasks and work effectively in a pressured environment with limited direction, requiring flexibility and sound decision making.
* Effective oral, written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively, both independently and within a team.

As the Associate Professor, you will provide leadership and foster excellence in teaching and research efforts of the School, within the University, and with the community, professional, commercial and industrial sectors. More specifically, you will be responsible for providing original, innovative and distinguished contributions to the School's programs for maintaining and advancing their scholarly, research and/or professional capabilities relevant to the Civil and Infrastructure Engineering Discipline at a national and international level. Within this role, you will also teach and make a significant contribution to teaching and learning in the Civil and Infrastructure Engineering Discipline to deliver best of class student experience.

As the Professor, you will bring research track record recognised at a national and international level in the specialist field of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering. In this role you, will provide high level research leadership developing and leading research project teams and programs and foster a vibrant research culture and academic performance. You will be required to develop a high-quality and productivity-driven research network across RMIT and with external national and global partners

About You

To be successful in the role, you will:

* Lead the advancement of teaching in the discipline including initiating program improvements and leading assessment design, conduct and moderation
* Make an outstanding contribution to the governance and collegial life inside and outside of the University
* Have nationally recognised research track record including substantial record of research outputs in high quality outlets and emerging international recognition in the field of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering
* Ensure implementation of best practice teaching strategies within discipline and dissemination of innovative practices across the University, including: initiating responses to emergent issues and integrating into curriculum development
* Experience and understanding of financial, governance and quality management systems within a University
* Experience in attracting and supervising higher degree by research candidates to maximise research performance

About You

The Administrative Coordinator, Office of the Chancellor provides essential support to the Chancellor and secretariat function supporting Council, as well as executive support to the General Counsel and University Secretary. In addition, you will also assist in compliance checking for the WIL team and provide administrative support for the Engagement team.

In addition, your empathy and can-do attitude, along with the ability to establish connections, will be critical to your success in this vital function. Experience in the health industry is a plus.

Potential weekend work and evening shifts are an essential component of this position to meet the demands of the clinic opening hours, which are outside of the standard University hours of operation.
