Manager AMHFA Program Delivery

A great opportunity exists for an experienced manager to oversee the delivery of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid (AMHFA) Program.

The Manager of AMHFA Program Delivery will:

  • schedule Instructor training courses, including identifying and engaging organisations where new Instructors of the Program can be trained,
  • oversee the quality of Instructor training courses,
  • supervise the Instructor Coordinator and Trainers of Instructors, and
  • identify opportunities to continuously improve the Program.

This is a 0.4FTE (equivalent to 2 days a week) that can be based anywhere in Australia.

About You 

You are an experienced manager with strong knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture. You also:

  • Are a great communicator and have experience communicating sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Have a high level of knowledge about mental health problems and services, especially in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Are experienced in improving the quality and effectiveness of training program  delivery
  • Have strong skills in building and managing relationships with external partners

The Positions

About the role:
As part of a Child Protection Early Intervention Unit Pilot, you will supervise and support a small team of non-legal advocates as they deliver quality support services to clients accessing the child protection system.

As a senior team member, you will provide leadership and mentoring to the team, monitor and manage caseload issues and ensure that effective debriefing practices are upheld to support the health and wellbeing of your team members. You will work closely with the Manager, Independent Mental Health Advocacy, to inform the services ongoing development and improvements. You will provide advocacy services in complex matters and support your clients to know and exercise their rights within the child protection system. You will build positive and mutually beneficial relationships with a broad range of stakeholders; including clients, child protection workers and a range of service providers, including Aboriginal Controlled services.

About you:
You will have strong leadership skills with experience in supervising staff and working alongside a broader team.
You will have extensive knowledge and experience of the child protection jurisdiction with an understanding of the challenges impacting Victorians when accessing the child protection system and support services. You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and employ these alongside your understanding of the child protection sector to advocate on behalf of your clients and ensure that they have the knowledge and tools available to navigate the system.

Crucial to your success in this role will be your experience in supporting and leading a team, and your ability to build a team environment which supports individual and team development and prioritises staff health and wellbeing.

As Case Manager, you will be responsible for developing and implementing Case Plans for children and young people in Out of Home Care. While drawing from your tertiary qualifications and experience, you will have a demonstrated understanding of current case plan practice for children and young people, experience with working with children and young people in out of home care, have strong negotiation and mediation skills and a current driver’s licence.

All urban environmental practices, research and policy occur on Aboriginal Country.  No matter the focus, approach, personnel, timing or framing, all of these practices have an impact on the lives and futures of Indigenous peoples.  A key challenge, then, is for urban practitioners and researchers to respond meaningfully to the expectations, rights and aspirations of Indigenous communities in urban areas. 

We are seeking a Research Fellow to lead a project exploring Indigenous perspectives on biodiversity in urban environments.  The Fellow will join the Clean Air and Urban Landscapes Hub (CAUL) of the National Environmental Science Program (NESP).  The NESP program is funded by the Australian federal government.

The Research Fellow will explore a range of research questions such as the significance of native biodiversity (including threatened species and ecological communities) for maintaining a connection to Country in the city; ways to improve the liveability and conservation value of urban landscapes by better incorporating Indigenous values and knowledge of biodiversity into urban design and management; and the utility of interdisciplinary collaborations between ecology, participatory art making and performance for engaging the broader community with Indigenous place, history and culture.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as Science, Environmental Science, Arts or a related field
  • Research experience, including the capacity to plan, conduct and report on research, relative to career opportunity
  • Expertise in field methods relevant to urban ecology
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with relevant professional and industry bodies, and to foster collaborative partnerships
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate with diverse audiences
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with a proven ability to meet deadlines
